2017’s SPRA Summer Festival, held on the weekend of 16th to 18th June was a great success: locals and visitors turned out in huge numbers, every event was well supported, the sun really shone, there was a wonderful sense of community throughout the weekend and we raised almost £6000 for five local charities (Slade Gardens APG, Friends of St. Michael’s Church, St Paul’s Food Bank in Ferndale Road, Raw Material in Robsart Street and Stockwell Park Community Trust) whilst having a very good time.
The Festival has settled down into a tried and trusted format although we are always open to new ideas in order to keep things fresh and ensure that they don’t become staid. This year for example we introduced a picnic in the Adventure Playground on the Saturday evening featuring a children’s disco and a wonderful performance from local singer / songwriter Ellie Rose.
The weekend began with the Quiz & Curry evening; an event which was sold out more than two weeks in advance. On Saturday the Festival Bazaar and Home & Garden competition drew more entries than ever before and the aforementioned Saturday evening picnic in the APG was a stellar event.
Sunday began with glorious sunshine. The Festival Service led by The Revd Erica Wooff with a wonderful ‘scratch’ choir set just the right tone for the day. Meanwhile the donkeys arrived in the APG and proved as popular as always and once again the pet show proved to be a real crowd pleasing event.
And then it was time for lunch for more than 200 adults and children, prepared this year by Kate Kellaway (The Stockwell Kitchen) assisted by Jo Craig and Sarah Barr(Al Fresco Feasts), and many others - this year’s lunch was, arguably, the best ever.
After lunch a walk around the six local open gardens was just the ticket.
And then, as always, it was time for tea with a stupendous array of cakes baked by some very talented and equally competitive locals.
None of this was possible, of course, without a great deal of work by a large number of people all of whom give their time for free. Nor, of course, was it possible without the support and participation of SPRA residents and visitors who turned out in such numbers and with such generosity of pocket and spirit over the weekend. It’s what makes living here such a joy.
We have already begun planning for next year’s festival which will be on the weekend of Friday 15th to Sunday 17th June 2018, so get those dates in the diary now.
